Scanning electron microscopy of a yellow nubbin from the lower passage in Gruta das Agulhas. Much of the nubbin was covered by biofilm, but breaks in the biofilm revealed the underlying rock surface, which was analyzed with EDX, and microorganisms contained in the biofilm. These microorganisms revealed studded spore-like shapes, spheres with copious amounts of either extracellular polymeric substances (snot) or some kind of cellular structure, such as fimbrae.
