These images are macroscopic and microscopic (scanning electron microscopy) images of tiny (1-2 mm in diameter) pink hexagons that we found on obsidian-like rock by the trail in Algar do Carvao. At first we thought they were round colonies of bacteria, but closer examination show them to be hexagons, which cast doubt on their biological nature. However, SEM, showed an abundance of biological shapes.
